Ireland: Latest silver Proof collector coins in “Modern Irish Musicians” series feature Phil Lynott

The Central Bank of Ireland has announced (6th November) that they will release their latest collector coins which is part of the series entitled “Modern Irish Musicians” that launched last year. The new silver Proof coins feature the singer Phil Lynott (1949–1986) and coincide with the 70th anniversary of his birth.

Born in the West Midlands of England as Philip Parris Lynott on the 20th August 1949, he was the first son of Philomena Lynott from Dublin and Cecil Parris, his father, who was originally from Georgetown in Guyana. Shortly after his birth, he and his mother moved to Dublin, his mother’s home, and where he spent all of his childhood. As a youngster, Lynott was introduced to music through his Uncle Timothy’s record collection and became influenced by the sounds of Motown from the U.S., as well as groups such as The Mamas & the Papas. He joined his first band, the Black Eagles, in 1965, as a lead singer, playing popular covers in local clubs around Dublin. After fronting several bands, Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in 1969. The band first found success with “Whiskey in the Jar”, followed by several hits in the mid-1970s with songs such as “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak,” “The Rocker,” and “Waiting for an Alibi.” He died of pneumonia and heart failure due to septicaemia on the 4th January 1986, at the age of just 36, and was buried in St. Fintan’s Cemetery, Sutton, Dublin. A greatly admired bronze statue of Phil Lynott created by sculptor Paul Daly stands outside the Bruxelles Club and Tavern on Harry Street in Dublin — a permanent tribute to one of the city’s most beloved sons. Phil Lynott left us all too soon, but his music and legacy continue to endure and inspire music lovers worldwide.
