The Austrian Mint has launched a new twelve-coin series entitled “Colorful Creatures,” which will kick off with the October 5 release of a coin featuring a fledermaus (German for “bat”). After this year, four coins will be issued annually for both 2017 and 2018, with three final pieces set to bring this series to its conclusion in 2019.
The coin was designed by Helmut Andexlinger and features a reverse image of a fledermaus beneath a full moon with the inscriptions, FLEDERMAUS and 2016. The color motifs on all of the coins in this series will glow in the dark.
The obverse carries miniature depictions of all of the animals scheduled to be featured in this series, including a bat (2016); a tiger, crocodile, kingfisher, and wolf (2017); a parrot, shark, owl, and frog (2018); and a turtle, otter, and crayfish (2019). Inscribed along the rim is REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH and 3 EURO.
Each coin in this series is composed of cupro-nickel, measures 34 mm in diameter, and has a mintage limited to 50,000 pieces. The 2016 “Colorful Creatures” fledermaus coin can now be pre-ordered for € 9.90. For more information, please visit the Web site of the Austrian Mint.
