The New Zealand Mint has issued the Sherlock 2 x 1 oz Silver Coin Set, which includes two one-ounce 99.9% silver coins featuring characters from the BBC’s popular television series, Sherlock. The two-coin set is available for $120 and is packaged in a rectangular coin case accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The total mintage for the coins is limited to 5,000 pieces.
Sherlock is a modern re-imagining of the classic Sherlock Holmes novels and stories created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The hit show, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson, is now heading into its fourth season.
The obverse of the first coin features a color image of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes, with a silver depiction of London appearing in the background. Inscribed in the field is a representative quote from the modern Holmes character stating, “ALONE IS WHAT I HAVE. ALONE PROTECTS ME,” with 1 OZ. 999 FINE SILVER appearing along the rim.
The second coin carries a color image of Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson beside a silver rendering of London below two finger prints. Inscribed in the field is Watson’s retort to the above Holmes quote, “NO, FRIENDS PROTECT PEOPLE.” Appearing along the rim is 1 OZ. 999 FINE SILVER.
The obverse of the coins features Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, TWO DOLLARS, 2016, and NIUE, the country of issue, included along the rim.
