The Perth Mint has released the 2016 Year of the Monkey “Wealth and Wisdom” 1 oz. Silver Proof Two-Coin Set, which is available for $180.91 AUD ($132.53 USD), and has a mintage limited to just 1,500 sets. Each coin is composed of one troy ounce of 99.9% silver and measures 40.60 mm in diameter. Tom Vaughan designed both of the reverses for this set.
These coins are part of the Perth Mint’s Lunar Good Fortune Series featuring elements of Chinese Astrology. The Year of the Monkey pertains to those whose year of birth forms part of a twelve-year cycle that includes 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, and, of course, 2016. People born in the Year of the Monkey are said to be intelligent, optimistic, and ambitious, according to a Mint press release.
The first coin in the series carries the inscriptions 2016 YEAR OF THE MONKEY, the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark, and WEALTH, the theme of this design. The product information notes that the monkey sits on a treasure chest and wears a vest make of silk, alluding to wealth and prosperity. A palace is pictured in the background.
The second coin carries the theme of Wisdom. A mature monkey rendered in silver perches in a tree beside a waterfall, with a temple visible over the hill. Inscribed along the rim of the design are WISDOM, the Mint’s “P” mint mark, and 2016 YEAR OF THE MONKEY.
The obverses of the coins share a design that includes Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 1 oz 999 SILVER, 1 DOLLAR, and TUVALU, the country of issue.
