The Perth Mint has gone all out in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Back to the Future, starring Michael J. Fox — aka one of the top three films of my childhood, along with The Goonies and the Star Wars trilogy. The Mint has issued three coins: a 1 oz. silver coin, a 1/4 oz. gold coin, and a 2 oz. silver issue in the shape of Back to the Future Part II‘s famous hoverboard. The designer had some fun with this one.

The 2015 Back to the Future 1 oz. Silver Proof Coin comes housed beneath the hood of a replica DeLorean, the car converted by Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown into Marty McFly’s time-machine. The coin is composed of 1 oz. of silver that is 99.9% pure, and has a mintage limited to 7,500 pieces.

The reverse, designed by Jennifer McKenna, features the DeLorean at its center, with the background showing the film’s iconic clocktower hit by lightning in the midst of a climactic thunderstorm. Inscribed above the image is the BACK TO THE FUTURE logo in full color, with 1 oz. 999 SILVER tucked beneath.

The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 1 DOLLAR, 2015, and TUVALU, the country of issue, inscribed along the rim. Each coin costs $135.00 AUD.

The 2015 Back to the Future 1/4 oz. Gold Proof Coin bears a similar design, with the DeLorean at the center of the reverse, and the clock from the tower presented in the background at a dynamic tilt. Inscribed below the image is 1/4 oz. 9999 GOLD. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 25 DOLLARS, 2015, and TUVALU, the country of issue, inscribed along the rim.

The gold coin has a maximum mintage of 1,000 pieces and is available for $750.00 AUD. Jennifer McKenna served as the designer on this issue, which comes in a wooden display case.

The 2015 Back to the Future Hoverboard 2 oz. Silver Coin has a maximum mintage of 2,015 pieces (get it?) and sells for $199.00 AUD. It is composed of 2 ounces of silver that is 99.9% pure.

Also designed by Jennifer McKenna, the coin’s reverse colorfully recreates the appearance of Marty McFly’s hoverboard in Back to the Future Part II, with HOVERBOARD inscribed at its center. The reverse also borrows from the board in the film, and features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscriptions, QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 2 DOLLARS, 2 oz 999 SILVER, 2015, and TUVALU.

The coin is presented in a case that uses magnets to hold the hoverboard in place, giving the impression that it is suspended in air.

The Hooverboard and the silver coin have been “unavailable” since around the second day on the Perth Mint site. It appears that the guy on HSN has a special relationship with the Perth Mint (so he says in video) and was able to purchase 100 and 750 of the Hooverboard and silver coins, respectively. The premiums on HSN are pretty hefty.

Perth always sells some of every issue to dealers and the rest to customers. HSN must be one of their US distributors.
