The Bank of Lithuania has recently released a new collector coin dedicated to literature. The coin is from the series “Culture of Lithuania.”
The reverse design of the coin takes a minimalist approach with a stylized depiction of the turning of a book’s pages. The pages move from static to dynamic, culminating with with pages resembling a bird’s wings. The design by artist Rytas Jonas Belevičius is intended to express the idea of artistic inspiration, which comes to the author and later enriches the life of the reader.
The obverse design of the coin also takes a minimalist approach with a depiction of Vytis, an armor clad knight on horseback holding a sword and shield which appears in the coat of arms of Lithuania. The rending is reminiscent of being painted in light brush strokes.
The edge of the coin contains the lettering ” LIETUVOS KULTŪRA * LITERATŪRA“.
Each coin is struck in 92.5% silver to proof quality with a weight of 12.44 grams and diameter of 28.70 mm. The mintage is 4,000 pieces.
The coins can be found on the Lithuania Mint’s website here.
