The latest $20 for $20 silver coin offered by the Royal Canadian Mint is issued as an official commemorative coin for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The championship tournament will be held in Canada from June 6 to July 5, 2015. A total of 24 qualified teams will be competing at venues located in the cities of Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, and Moncton.
As with previous releases under the $20 for $20 silver coin program, the coin will be sold at its face value. The reverse design of the coin features a soccer action scene by artist Joel Kimmel. The obverse features the Susanna Blunt portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Each coin is struck in 99.99% silver with a specimen finish. The diameter if 27 mm and the weight is 7.96 grams. There is a maximum mintage of 200,000 pieces imposed. The product page on the Royal Canadian Mint website can be found here.
The Royal Canadian Mint will also be releasing other collector coins in celebration of Canada’s hosting of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. These will include four $10 silver coins with themes “The Kicker”, “Heading the Ball”, “The Goalie”, and “Celebration”; two $10 colored silver coins with themes “Canada Welcomes the World” and “Go Canada Go!”; and three $75 gold coins with themes “The Soccer Ball”, “The Championship Game”, and “The Trophy.” These coins will go on sale April 7, 2015.
