The Perth Mint has started accepting orders for a new 5 oz silver proof high relief coin featuring four Chinese ancient mythical creatures.
According to ancient Chinese mythology, the universe was divided into four quadrants marking the beginning and end of the winter and summer solstices, and the autumn and spring equinoxes. These quadrants were represented by a guardian animal with a corresponding color, element, and virtue.
The reverse design of the coin features a portrayal of the four Chinese ancient mythical creatures, the blue dragon, white tiger, red phoenix, and black tortoise. The yinyang symbol is shown at the center of the coin. An inscriptions reads “Chinese Ancient Mythical Creatures”.
This design has been seen previously on a 5 oz silver proof colored coin released in 2014. This is the first time the design has been rendered in high relief.
The obverse of the coin contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the 2015-date and monetary denomination. The coins are issued as legal tender under the authority of the government of Tuvalu.
Each coin is struck from 5 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver to proof quality with a diameter of 50.60 mm and maximum thickness of 12.50 mm. No more than 1,000 of the Chinese Ancient Mythical Creatures 2015 5oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin will be released.
The coins come presented in a black box with illustrated shipper and numbered certificate of authenticity. For additional information or to place an order, please visit the Perth Mint product page.
