2015 Chinese Ancient Mythical Creatures 5oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin

The Perth Mint has started accepting orders for a new 5 oz silver proof high relief coin featuring four Chinese ancient mythical creatures.

According to ancient Chinese mythology, the universe was divided into four quadrants marking the beginning and end of the winter and summer solstices, and the autumn and spring equinoxes. These quadrants were represented by a guardian animal with a corresponding color, element, and virtue.

2015 High Relief Ancient Mythical Creatures Silver Coin

The reverse design of the coin features a portrayal of the four Chinese ancient mythical creatures, the blue dragon, white tiger, red phoenix, and black tortoise. The yinyang symbol is shown at the center of the coin. An inscriptions reads “Chinese Ancient Mythical Creatures”.

This design has been seen previously on a 5 oz silver proof colored coin released in 2014. This is the first time the design has been rendered in high relief.

The obverse of the coin contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the 2015-date and monetary denomination. The coins are issued as legal tender under the authority of the government of Tuvalu.

Each coin is struck from 5 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver to proof quality with a diameter of 50.60 mm and maximum thickness of 12.50 mm. No more than 1,000 of the Chinese Ancient Mythical Creatures 2015 5oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin will be released.

The coins come presented in a black box with illustrated shipper and numbered certificate of authenticity. For additional information or to place an order, please visit the Perth Mint product page.

It is sad that a country like Australia seems to want to fall over itself with Chinese coins. It’g getting pretty old to be honest.

I think it’s a good looking coin. Don’t see any issues with Austrialia borrowing ideas from the Chinese culture. The Lunar series coins 1 & 2 have been great and well received overall.

Koalas, kookaburras, kangaroos, spiders, sharks etc.
You also have to cater to your biggest export market. It won’t be long before the US will be doing the same.

I think this will make a great addition to the collection rendered in HR and great subject matter, plus Perth is offering FREE shipping to US if over 400 AU dollars, which makes this qualify. At just 1,000 worldwide, I see this as a keep and a true gem to be cherished…

The video on Perth site helped move me to purchase, to this in HR is truly stunning. Hard to buy from a photo but when you get to see the actual coin via a good video camera, it really helps, thanks Perth for providing the videos, it helps us make better decisions on future purchases…
