The Royal Canadian Mint has officially launched a collection of four new Superman gold and silver coins. Pre-orders for the coins were accepted from Master’s Club members starting late last week. Today, the designs were officially unveiled and orders opened to the general public.
Last year, the Royal Canadian Mint had released a series of Superman themed coins to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the character. The four new coins release this year each feature iconic depictions of Superman taken from comic book covers.
A 1/2 oz Silver Coin carries the iconic depiction of Superman from the cover of Action Comics #1 published in 1938. This coin is limited to a mintage of 10,000 pieces.
A 1 oz Silver Coin features a dramatic modern depiction of the character from the cover of Superman Annual #1 published in 2012. This is the Superman of “The New 52” universe, which was a revamp and relaunch of the entire DC Comics line of monthly superhero books. The coin carries a maximum mintage of 10,000 pieces.
A third silver coin features a classic depiction of Superman in flight from the cover of Action Comics #419 published in 1972. The coin has a weight of 23.17 grams and diameter of 36.07 mm. The mintage is limited to 10,000 pieces.
A 14-Karat Gold Coin features an image of Clark Kent changing into Superman from the cover of the Adventures of Superman #596, published in 2001. Each coin has a weight of 12 grams and diameter of 27 mm. The mintage is limited to 2,000.
It appears that the available stock on the Royal Canadian Mint’s website has already sold out for three of the four releases. Only the silver coin featuring the image of Superman from Action Comics #419 remains available to order. Additional new products will go on sale at the Royal Canadian Mint early next week.
