The Perth Mint has released a new silver bullion coin featuring the Great White Shark. The Australian legal tender coins carry a limited mintage of 300,000 pieces.
The reverse design by Natasha Muhl carries a fearsome depiction of a Great White Shark with the outline of two other sharks swimming in the background. Inscriptions around the outer circle include “Great White Shark” and “2014 1/2 oz 999 Silver”. The obverse carries the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the Australian legal tender denomination of “50 cents”.
The 1/2 oz silver bullion coins are packaged in rolls of 25, with 20 rolls contained in a full monster box of 500 coins. There is a maximum mintage of 300,000 coins indicated.
Based on the pricing available at Apmex, the new Great White Shark 1/2 oz Silver Coins are priced lower compared to the 1/2 oz sizes for the Perth Mint’s Australian Lunar and Australian Koala series.
This likely will not be the last addition to the Perth Mint’s bullion line. Later in the year, silver bullion coins are expected to be released featuring John Mercanti’s Wedge Tailed Eagle design. As covered previously, explanatory statements within required filings indicate authorization for the issuance of 2014-dated 99.9% silver 1 oz silver bullion coins. Details of the mintage and distribution have not yet been revealed.
