25th Anniversary Gold Philharmonic Proof Set

The Austrian Mint has released a special set to mark the 25th anniversary of the Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coin. Starting in 2014, the range of sizes available for the bullion series has been expanded to include a 1/25 oz coin.

The 25th Anniversary Gold Philharmonic Two Coin Set includes proof quality versions of the 2014-dated 1 ounce and 1/4 ounce gold coins. Each coin is struck in .9999 gold with a weight of 38.88 grams across the two coins. These are packaged in a display case with protective sleeve and numbered certificate of authenticity. The mintage for the product is indicated as 5,000 sets.

The design of the Gold Philharmonic by Chief engraver Thomas Pesendorfer has remained the same since its original launch in 1989. One side of the coin is an assortment of musical instruments including a Viennese horn, a bassoon, a harp, four violins, and a cello.

On the other side is the great organ of the Musikverein concert hall in Vienna, home of the world famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Originally the denomination was in Austrian Schilling, but from 2002 to present the coins have been denominated in Euros.

As opposed to some of the other popular world bullion series, there have been relatively few special versions of the Gold Philharmonic offered throughout the course of the series. The new 25th anniversary set actually has the most accessible price point of the special offerings. In 2004, a limited number of 1,000 ounce Gold Philharmonics were offered to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the series. In 2009, there were a quantity of 6,027 of 20 ounce gold Philharmonics offered to mark the 20th anniversary of the series.

The 25th Anniversary Gold Philharmonic Proof Set is priced €1,590.00 on the Austrian Mint website. The product page can be found here.

Starting this year, the Austrian Mint has introduced a 1/25 oz Gold Philharmonic bullion coin. These coins are struck in .9999 gold with a weight of 1.24 grams and diameter of 13.00 mm. Each coin carries the same classic design and has a legal tender face value of 4 Euro.

The Gold Philharmonic bullion coins are now available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/25 oz sizes. The Silver Philharmonic is available in 1 oz size only.

I have not seen any news on a special silver set, but the anniversary dates for the coins are different. The Silver Philharmonic was not introduced until 2008.

Why I need password to log in for purchasing this 25th anniversary gold and silver philharmonic proof set at Austrian Mint website? For example I do not need password to purchasing coins from Estonian Central Bank to buy commemorative coin. So why at Austrian Mint?

@Koichi: My experience is whenever I buy from pretty much any website, they want you to create an account which includes your own personal password so as not to let fraud happen. Maybe you can place a phone call and just do the transaction over the phone with a credit card, but that is very standard practice. See if they have option to check out as a GUEST. That usually allows you to buy WITHOUT creating an account. I hope this helps and good luck with your set.
