New Releases from the Perth Mint June 2012

Several new products recently went on sale at the Perth Mint. These can all be found as the most recent entries within the recent releases section on the Perth Mint’s website.

The 2012 Discover Australia Platinum Coins have been released. These join the gold and silver coins previously released for the program.

Five separate designs are issued featuring the Kookaburra, Whale Shark, Red Kangaroo, Goanna, and the Green and Gold Bell Frog. Each design depicts the animal against a colored background. The one-tenth ounce .9995 pure platinum proof coins are limited to 1,000 pieces each and may be purchased either individually or as part of a complete five coin set.

An Australian Map Shaped Coin featuring the Kookaburra has been released. This 1 ounce .999 fine silver coin depicts the iconic bird before a colored background.

This represents the first release within a new coin series. The mintage limit is 6,000 pieces.

The final coin within the series Australian Sea Life II- The Reef has been released. This coin features the Manta Ray with the reverse designed by Wade Robinson, who was profiled in this Coin Update article.

Each coin is struck in 1/2 ounce of .999 silver to proof quality. The mintage limit is 10,000 coins. Previous designs within the series featuring the Hawksbill Turtle, Starfish, Surgeonfish, and Octopus remain available for sale.

The final new release for this month is the 2012 Year of the Dragon 5 oz. Silver Proof Coin. Unfortunately this product cannot be ordered by customers in the USA. (See this previous article on Perth Mint exclusive products.)

Each coin is struck in 5 ounces of .999 fine silver to proof quality. The reverse features a dragon with the pearl of wisdom, as previously seen on bullion and other numismatic releases. The mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces.

Customers from the USA are directed towards www.newyorkmint.com to make their purchase. I don’t see the coin listed for sale anywhere on that website yet. The price listed on the Perth Mint product page is AUS $450.00 or US $436.94.

Comments

  1. Schalk says

My guess is that the Chinese Dragon 5 oz will be a commissioned product from one of their US distributors.

  2. Louis says

Now it says no sales to the US at Downies but it was not there when I placed
my order earlier. I wonder if they will cancel it.

  3. Louis says

Seems like no one cares now after all the excitement earlier, but anyway I called and Downies will not ship even if the note was not there when you ordered. It’s NY Mint or nothing.

  4. G says

5 oz DOL?? What is that about? Can’t wait for the next Deadly Dangerous. I don’t like the 5oz DOL- why mess with a good thing?

  5. says

I had not had the chance to order from Downies, but it is a huge disappointment to hear that they won’t ship to us either. Ugh, I am not looking forward to the offering from New York Mint.

Thanks for the heads up Louis.

  6. Michael says

On a positive note NYM/GovMint is probably one of the Perth’s largest distributors. Maybe the ability to sell through them plus create exclsuives for them ultimately gives us more choices.

  7. Samuel says

hardly to find anything cheaper on NYM’s website that is cheaper than other dealers.

  8. VABEACHBUM says

In a related, “exclusive dealer” development, Paradise Mint was supposed to be the exclusive US dealer of the HR Kook, and over the last month had been offering NGC MS70 slabs for $179 and free shipping. About two weeks ago, MCM started offering the same MS70 coin for $139 + $6 S/H. Within the past 24 hours, Paradise has reduced their pricing for this same coin to a sale price of $109.99 w/ free shipping (add OGP for $8) – while continuing to offer the raw version for $104.99.

Glad I waited. At that price, I’ll definitely pick up an MS70 slab and the OGP. I wonder if we’ll see similar Perth Mint and US distribution actions w/ the HR Kangaroo in July?

Meanwhile, if their $99, 2012 US Silver Proof Set is any indication, I have absolutely no faith that NYM will ever be this competitive with any offering.

  9. Zwiggy says

Even if NY Mint has decent prices on this – the most annoying this is when you get a call saying “Have I got a deal for you! Have you ever seen anything 91 years old that is still shiny and looks new!? Here you can have, from a special hoard only we aquired, a classic 1921 Morgan dollar for only $149.99.”

I ordered just once from them 2 years ago and still get the occasional call.

  10. Garry says

Have any of you used talismancoins.com before ? They have some of the above coins listed and say they are an official distributor for the perth mint

  11. Don says

Just speculation but paradisemint was selling 100 kooks in a sealed case so it would have been possible for MCM to buy a box or 2 and get them graded. Im not expecting a small fee from NYM. Ill probably pass on the 5 ouncer

  12. Dave in CT. says

I do not care for these and would really like to see more HR offerings from
the Perth mint. I hope that Perth knows and understands that in the states, collectors would enjoy more of these coins. Not big on country/continent shaped coins. Only will please “the not serious collectors”. I will pass on this one. Looking for a 5 oz. HR. Bring it on.

  13. Sam Baker says

    Garry,
I have had mixed results with Talisman. A few years ago, I found their prices and service to be pretty good. Earlier this year I placed an order and did not hear from them for two months. I sent emails asking about the status of my order and got no response. I finally called them which is what I should have done in the first place and cancelled the order. Ironically I purchased the same coins on eBay for a cheaper price and got them two days later and the eBay seller was Talisman Coins!

  14. G says

I have always gotten my orders from Talisman- it can take a while sometimes. Their eBay sales ship faster it seems, but they’re trustworthy

  15. Samuel says

from the perthmint’s response to Louis’ post at their blog website- “New York Mint initiated the 5oz Silver Proof Dragon project…”. i will bet the next 5oz chinese dragon will also be in the same situation.

  16. says

Alan….read VABEACHBUM’s comment at 9:41am….a much better deal overall for a graded coin…and he meant PF70, not MS70 as these are proof coins.

  17. Louis says

    Mike,
If you are in the USA, Downies will not process the order. I put an order in last night and then saw the note saying no sales to USA. I called and they said it will not be processed.

  18. Sam Baker says

Ebay has a few of them listed. One of them is listed for just a little bit more of what Downies was charging. You could even take a chance and make an offer.

  19. Dave in CT. says

Talking about stores that sell the 2012 HR Kookabuura’s, my co-worker bought 6from Paradise Mint and told me that he sent 2 back (stains on the obverse) for a credit and not for an exchange. I didn’t believe him about the very nasty emails that were sent to him ( trying to get his credit card refund ) until he put it up on his screen and behold ! They were really ignorant and mean remarks. They even threatened to tell all of their wholesale buyers not to sell to him, and that’s not all. They went one step further and sent him an email stating that they were also going to send out his IP address to their customer base along with their wholesale buyer list as stated above. He showed me the emails. I wouldn’t have believed without seeing it myself. I always thought that they were in the middle as far as customer service. But to try and blackball someone because they wanted to get credit on the credit card is,well, no excuse for this. Is Paradise doing such good business that they would blackball a guy for asking for $203.98 back ? You be the judge. Like i stated above, would not have believed it if i didn’t see the emails for myself. Supposedly too, since this started last week, suddenly everyone in the world has his email address. Me’s think they are vindictive. What kind of behavior is this ? I am still shaking my head at this sad situation. He changed his email because of this. Just for asking Paradise to return his money.

  20. Saucexx says

Put in my order for the Paradise deal and it’s already shipped. That’s just too good to pass up.

As info I’ve placed a couple orders with Talisman and got them both. One hiccup though they sent me the wrong coin in my latest order. No response from TC yet. Take out of it what you will….

Over at MNB there was a lot of talk about the 5oz Unc El Yunque being to expensive at $205. It’s interesting that Perth is selling the Dragon for $440 (who knows what NYM is going to charge, $500+?) and it’s not inciting the same reaction. I know it’s a lower mintage and it’s a one time proof Dragon but still, that’s a hefty premium. After thinking about it I’m definitely going to pass. It’s funny that we don’t flinch at the premiums foreign mints charge but if the US Mint wants to charge $149 for the San Fran 75th Set we all jump out of our shoes.

  21. Saucexx says

    Dave,

We’re they raw coins or slabbed? I’ve purchased some slabbed coins from them off of eBay and never had a problem. Sorry to hear about your friends issues.

  22. Samuel says

i also had a raw coin gets milky spot, after looking at the their website, did not find any return policy, so i just keep the coin.

  23. says

    Sauce,

There’s a few differences between the AtBs and the Perth Mint dragons. First, the dragons have a very limited mintage, which tends towards higher premiums. Second, the dragons as a whole are far more popular than the AtBs. The least popular dragon (the gilded) still sold out more quickly than the most popular AtB numismatic release. Third, the dragon program is not struggling like the AtB program is – in the case of the dragon program, buyers are angry because they cannot get the dragons, whereas the Mint can’t seem to give the AtB five ounce coins away.

I have also advocated in the past that Perth should drop prices on its less popular goods, or else just melt them down. They still have some coins from 2010 on their website such as the high relief Marathon coin, and the 2010 gemstone dragon. Since both of these products are not selling, Perth ought to either cut prices on them or remove them from sale from the website.

However, excepting the gemstone dragon, Perth has not had that issue with its silver dragons.

  24. Dave in CT. says

    Saucexx

They were in the box from what he told me. But the 2 were pretty
disgusting, which is why they were shipped back. Non-slabbed.I didn’t
see them myself. I have just visited their website ( I am at work now), and I
have read their terms and conditions. It does say that slabbed, bullion and I
think raw coins will not be returned. But this is a numismatic coin, hence
the “P” mint mark. Doesn’t say anything about this type in the terms. But
the fact is they made i big deal out of taking the coins back. i read his 4
email sent to them. Now as time passed, the words got stronger between both of them, but no threats, no cussing and cursing. Just that he wanted his refund and that since their policy didn’t cover this type of return, and they acknowledged receiving these coins, how about just being decent and just credit my card. Have not seen him this morning, but yesterday evening,
he did tell me that they will not give him credit. He did file a dispute with his card company’s dispute dept. This is plain vindictiveness. Like I stated, I saw all the emails sent to him and some had yelling going on at him. (upper case words). I will not be ordering from them. Really evil people over there ! I doubt if this is a one time thing with them.

  25. Sam Baker says

I bought a slabbed coin from Paradise Mint on and sent them a note asking them if there was any chance that they had the OGP to go with it. Their response pretty much told me that I was an idiot because it was a “huge waste of money”. Now months later I see that they are selling some slabbed coins with OGP.

  26. Sam Baker says

CO. are you going to be writing another blog soon? I really enjoy reading them.

  27. Dave in CT. says

I just do not understand why Paradise has to treat customers this way.
Is the owner doing this, or is it the staff, and he is unaware of the bad treatment that is taking place? Their is no need to talk/reply in this fashion to anyone, being a customer or a stranger. Just no need ! Why are they continuing trying to do their best to offend people that are spending good hard earned money with them ? I really get the feeling the owner (?) is trying to sabotage his business.Could it be a disgruntled worker ? I have talked to other coin stores on the their internet sites and have found it to be about 50/50. That is, half hired off the streets, half hired through the family, or relatives. The FACTS are in, beware of Paradise. Order at your own risk.

  28. says

    Hi Sam,

Part of the reason I haven’t blogged a lot recently is due to a big increase in the number of hours at work; I’ve just had less energy to write lately. But this sale (or nonsale in the case of US customers) of the five ounce dragon has gotten me fired up to write again. I will have something up tonight or tomorrow, hopefully.

I’ve had a plan to do a megapost for some time on what I think of the secondary market potential for silver dragons (in other words, I want to try to ID the “key dates”), and I’m hoping will encompass most or all of the numismatic releases. Such a post is going to take quite some time to write, though, and I will probably need to break it up into multiple parts because there’s so many dragons and so many variables to consider. I am also going to need to wait for the fallout from the sale of the five ounce silver proof as well, but I don’t plan to wait for more of the solo colored releases. I think sales of those coins will be similar to the purple dragon.

I’ve noticed the five ounce proof is still freely available on Perth’s webpage, and that product went up on noon Monday. I suspect that if US customers could order the coins, they’d have sold out by now.

  29. Samuel says

for a dealer, probably the customer service is just a one-man department.so, maybe it is good idea to try other department or escalate this to high level employees. i really doubt the owner wants the customers to be treated this way.

  30. Dave in CT. says

While I was just posted my last thoughts, my co-worker came into work (late), seems Paradise sent him another email this morning stating they can’t refund his money because of him disputing the $203.98 and that they can’t do anything for 30 days. B.S!!. Visa fraud dept. told him that they can put the refund in for him immediately and the dispute case will be dropped. No waiting. And my co-worker also added that he went and checked his old email, and guess what ? 126 emails from everyone @ their brother. He is fuming about this. He states that this is not a coincidence. Paradise is behind this malicious behavior. Kind of funny that theses unwanted emails start after he contacted them stating he had already started a dispute.
This all started because they would not respond to his emails after he traced/tracked the 2 returned coin back to Paradise. Then a week later,
Paradise says, “oh ! we were out for Memorial Day and could not get back to you” in upper case with few other nasty words added in. But when he sent the email stating his intentions (filing a dispute) they contacted him IMMEDIATELY. Then it started. Again, changing his email has caused him great harm and embarrassment. If paradise gets any coins that I need, I will buy off of Ebay. I have a 100% great feedback and my friend does too. Just why would they do this ? That is the million dollar question. Ahhhh !

  31. Dave in CT. says

Samuel, that is the answer to the million dollar question I was looking for.
He still will never, never purchase from them again @ I won’t either.
Just to much at stake if I order and my coin is a cheery picked one.
Back to work, my lunch hour is over, lol !

  32. saucexx says

    CO,

I know it’s closer to an apples or oranges comparison vs the AtB 5oz, but silver is silver. There’s at most $150 in silver and $300+ in markup plus who knows what the NYM will add on.. I thought it was interesting we accept premiums like that from Perth etc., but we’d be up in arms if the US mint did the same. BTW I’m guilty as charged for buying a lot of these coins but I’m starting to reassess my purchasing decisions……………..

There was an article not too long ago about British dealers refusing to buy coins from the Royal Mint because the premiums were so high. They were concerned that people were bringing in their RM coins and the dealers couldn’t pay them anywhere near what they were purchased for. The coins were so overvalued they were losing money as soon as they were purchased and not likely to recoup their investment. I recently purchased a Titanic PF70 for less than the OGP version and I jumped on the HR Kookaburra PF70 deal at Paradise. I’d love to see Perth become a little more reasonable with their pricing so this scenario doesn’t develop for them.

  33. saucexx says

    CO,

Yes, if Perth would’ve allowed US sales on the 5 oz dragon I probably would’ve purchased one. I’ll pass on the NYM though.

  34. says

I’m inclined to pass on NYM as well, though perhaps if there’s enough uproar we might get premiums close to what Perth is charging, in which case I’d buy.

You are correct we’d be up in arms if they charged those kinds of prices for the AtBs, but my attitude is people want the dragons much more and thus are willing to pay Perth’s premiums. Of course, I’m an unabashed Perth fanboy so most of the time I stomach their premiums without complaint. 🙂

  35. samuel says

    Captain,
i will not be surprised if the price is the same as perthmint. BUT, the coins maybe something below 69 quality.

  36. Sam Baker says

Slightly off topic. -does anybody have/ know something about/ or have an opinion about the Rwanda 3 coin dragon 3D set?

  37. Shutter says

Third, the dragon program is not struggling like the AtB program is

I’m pretty sure that it’s the Lunar program rather than the Dragon program. The dragon coins are just one year’s worth. The dragon is probably the absolute highest water mark for lunar coins. They still have not sold out all of the 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 Lunar coins. And they didn’t do as well in the past. Consider Series I dragons from 2000. I just looked at their bullion sales report dated 5/31/2010. Of the 300,000 1oz maximum mintage, they only sold 118,697. Of the 500,000 ½oz maximum mintage, they only sold 52,956. For whatever reason, they are doing much better in 2012 than in 2000.

I won’t dispute the valid point that the ATB program is struggling, but in less than a week US Mint sold more El Yunque coins than Perth will mint 5oz Dragons. I’m guessing that they will sell more El Yunque bullion than Perth bullion 5oz Dragons as well.

Incidentally, your tax dollars at work:
    http://news.coinupdate.com/national-park-anniversary-commemoartive-coins-proposed-1416/
Apparently our elected representatives feel that that they’ve solved all the other problems and what the country really craves is more National Park coins.

  38. saucexx says

Shutter, the bigger question is which Senator or Rep’s “girlfriend” is going to benefit from National Park commemoratives.

On another note, does anybody know if it’s possible to give the Mint the latitude to design and sell coins without approval from congress? My thought would be to give the Mint authority to sell a line of coins based on their own market research. Say one or more coins a year using whatever metal the mint wanted. They would introduce designs not mandated by congress, call them “Design Series” or something. They could even sell limited mintages like some of the foreign mints.

  39. The Asian Guy says

    Dave in CT,

I stopped purchasing coins from Paradisemint since 2009. It was the first year I started collecting coins. I bided two 2004 ASE PCGS PR70 First Strike which had spots and I emailed them for an exchange or refund and ended up I was called stupid! Messages were exchanged and I mentioned it wasn’t a proper way to treat your customer. Paradisemint stated selling coins was only the small part of their business. I requested for the owner and he was the owner! He also mentioned if I purchased coins from other dealers, the coins were from him anyway indirectly because he was the biggest graded coins distributor. They block you from bidding their listings and they will laugh at you like it is your loss.

MCM, Bostonmoderncoins, crc-1 and few others where I can purchase all of my collections and they provide excellent service and professionalism unlike Paradisemint.

  40. saucexx says

    AG,

Your saying SLABBED coins came with spots? Anybody know how common that might be? I’d expect if there was no damage to the slabs you could send them back to the TPG.

  41. Saucexx says

Samuel I know bullion is especially at risk for developing spots. But if a coin is slabbed then it happened after it was graded. If that’s the case it could’ve been handled poorly, spit on etc. And the TPG should have some potential liability. As far as it happening to the coin over time, anybody have any thoughts on how soon you’d see it? Two months, four months a year etc. It seems to me after a period of time the risk would diminish.

  42. kbo says

co the dragon’s is for this year amd yes more people want them, my self included but ATB is till 2021 i think so yes the Dragon’s are more popular but a lot higher and so are Canada’s 5 ounce Calgary Stampede for about $ 500.00 yes the mintage’s is very low I hope all of us who wants one of the 5 ounce pr.dragon’s can get one at a fare price.
