2012 Calgary Stampede Silver Dollar

The Royal Canadian Mint has just released the Calgary Stampede Silver Dollar to celebrate 100 years for “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.”

The reverse design of the coin features an image capturing the wild spirit of the Stampede’s bearback bronco rodeo event. A cowboy is shown battling to control a wildly bucking bronco. The words “Calgary Stampede” appear above in a Western typeface. Additional inscriptions include “2012”, “Canada”, and “Dollar”. The obverse of the coin features the Susanna Blunt portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Each coin is struck in .9999 fine silver with a diameter of 36.07 mm and weight of 23.17 grams. This coin is limited to a mintage of 10,000 pieces and carries an ordering limit of one per household. Pricing is listed at $69.95 CAD.

About a month ago, the RCM had released 5 ounce silver coins and 5 ounce gold coins for the Calgary Stampede. The silver coins were limited to 1,500 coins and priced at $495.95, while the gold coins were limited to 200 and priced at $11,999.95.

The Royal Canadian Mint seems to have become very adept at releasing multiple coins for a theme, which cover a spectrum of pricing points, with mintages established to drive frequent sell outs. This seems to play directly into strategies and goals that the RCM has publicly revealed.

Within their most recent annual report, they expressed their intention of increasing the number of sell outs and also more than doubling the number of new product releases. For the year to date, I believe that the RCM has already achieved more sell outs than in the entire previous year. For the first quarter, numismatic revenue has more than doubled.

I ordered one of these today. The 5oz coins were nice but out of my budget. It would’ve been better if they were a full 1oz, but 3/4 oz will have to do.

  2. Samuel says

the olympic loonie and $2 coin, even though it says for CA only, i still can put them in cart. will they cancel them later?

  3. Rolling Thunder says

I like the design very much & really considered ordering but decided not to -however if RCM had added something about “100 Years” on the coin I would be all in. Also agree that 1 oz would have been a more attractive weight.

  4. saucexx says

On a side note, is anybody collecting the “Rome on the Danube” series from the Austrian Mint? I really like the designs and the mintage seems low enough (50K).

  5. Samuel says

i collect the “famous abbey” and ‘legends and tales”, the coins r small. the Rome ones r expensive.

still “coming soon” on NZ Mint site (mid-July?)

I’m confused about “100 Years” of Calgary Stampede!

    Just saw this ebay auction
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1975-CANADIAN-CALGARY-STAMPEDE-100th-ANNIVERSARY-SILVER-DOLLAR-PROOF-CASE-/180908236237?pt=US_Canadian_Coins&hash=item2a1ef89dcd

Shows a 1975 RCM coin that is inscribed “1875 CALGARY 1975” – is this coin 100th anniversary of “Calgary” & the 2012 coin 100th anniversary of “Stampede”?

Anyone know what is going on here?

  8. G says

Thunder- thanks for the glowing Dino tip- just picked one up. In other news- I got my 2012 proof libertad in the mail yesterday- my gut says this is gonna be a very low mintage. They’re hard to find this year.

  9. Samuel says

G, still no fractional proof ones? apmex wood box is still there and price is lowered by $10. about 30 something gone during the pst 3 or 4 months.

  10. Chris says

    First post for me!!!

Rolling Thunder In regards to the Great White Shark coin I contacted the NZ mint about the release date because I’ve been waiting for it to be released since…March. Here is the response I received from Sheryl.

“Hi Chris it is definitely coming unfortunately we have experienced a few delays but we are looking at it being available early August.”

Good thing we are all used to waiting for our coins…

off topic…Re: Israel 2010 Jonah the Whale 2 NIS coin…is $~240 for a NGC PF70 a good price for this coin? I really lke this coin, but I’m not sure what a fair price for it is…any help is greatly appreciated!!

  12. Louis says

@saucexx- I also collect the Rome on the Danube series mainly because I like the designs, and the engraving is excellent. However, for a world issue, 50K mintage is on the high side unless the coin has a really solid following like their niobium series (which is even better). The first couple niobiums are worth several hundred each and are hard to find. I would not expect the Danube coins to appreciate, at least not until several years have passed, but they are fun to look at. The series is ending this year I think as there were supposed to be 6 issues. They also got me to learn things I did not know about Roman occupation of what is now Austria.

  13. Schalk says

    Steve

Jonah in the Whale at APMEX:

    PCGS PR70 DCAM $249.99
    NGC PF70 UCAM $229.99

Prices reasonable – they used to cost a lot more.

  14. Shutter says

Re: Israel 2010 Jonah the Whale 2 NIS coin

There is an eBay guy selling it in OGP with BIN for $186. I’m just not sure how much value to put into slabs of foreign coins that have very small graded pop.

Also, last year when I bought it for $92 in OGP, I thought I was overpaying. If you’re not totally committed to slabbed, consider 2 coin set (2NIS and 1NIS) for $236 or 3 coin set (Jonah, Elijah, Samson) for $425. You can find them at israelmint.com. Jonah is definitely the best from this long running series, but the others have similar style and may appeal to you.

At $230, you may never recoup your money. These coins are 28.8g in sterling, so the melt value is about $23.

  15. G says

Samuel- there definitely won’t be any fractional proof ones this year. Also- the sets that Apmex has are not the limited to 1000 sets with the COA. those wood box sets sell for closer to $250. check out the prices recently completed on eBay. I highly suggest getting a 2012 proof. They keep their mintage numbers secret but last year was a high mintage year and this year nobody seems to have the ’12 proof and they’ve been out for months.

  16. Hidalgo says

The Royal Canadian Mint has sold out its allotment of this coin. However, you can find it for sale elsewhere that Canadian coins are sold.

I prefer the colorized quarter version of the Calgary Stampede coin. For that reason, I’ll pass on getting this coin.

By the way, I ordered a 2012 Two Loons silver coin and a Colored 25-Cent Coin and Stamp Set- 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede from the Canadian Post. For whatever reason, the 25 cent coin is appearing in my order, but not the Two Loons coin. Anyone know why that might be?

  17. Dave in CT. says

Wonder how many collectors know/realize that many coins in the top grades
that are sold by dealers, will decrease in value as time goes on. One example
would be, the 25th ASE set. I remember soon after they sold out, the sellers were getting $850/so and now they seem to be hovering around, $600 and change. I am saying that if you can wait awhile, then wait. No sense being in a hurry. Not like you’ll be paying out more if you wait. The chances are you will save some money. I waited on the Mongolian Owl, and I still see the prices are up there, but not as high as they once were.

  18. Louis says

G- What’s the deal with keeping the Libertad mintages secret? I have found that it is hard to get solid numbers on the 2011 coins, for example. Does the Mexican Mint eventually publish them on their web site, or do you have to rely on other sources like Wikipedia? Whitman has a major reference series coming out on Mexican coins but they will not be releasing those volumes for a while.
Also, thanks for the tips on the 2012 coins and Don Bailey. I have two proofs and some fractionals coming, and the proof prices have already been raised from $70 to $95.
By the way, have you ever seen a proof-like kilo version? They are truly magnificent coin art with the winged angel in high relief. Absolutely stunning and very cheap at APMEX right now.

  19. Samuel says

Dave, to be honest it also bothers me. i dont know i should buy right now or wait.
i dont have many price decreasing examples, or probably i did not pay attention to those coins at all. but i do have some real examples that i wait and wait, and then i can’t afford. for example this RCM ladybug, just before the bumblebee came out, it was still around $250, less than one month the bumblebee came out, the price shot up to $500! the whole thing happened in about 1 month. another RCM example, the glow in the dark coin, i did not buy it when available at RCM, then sold out, and on ebay only less than $60 later, now, >$100.

  20. Broooster says

Samuel, you can get a great deal on the glow in the dark coin at Downies. It’s under 50 bucks I think.

  21. Dave in CT. says

Samuel, I understand your frustration. But wait a longer period time.
The bee and bugs are kool, but those are not real collector coins. From what I have seen, the real collector coin and not all, generally keep prices stable. I’m betting most others, i.e., colored, ships, hedgehogs, bugs and bees will all go down once the novelty wears off. Now you take my collection of 1889-CC’s, now here are some that should always keep they’re value. Would you rather own a stupid coin w/a bee sitting on top of it, or spend that money on a real coin, like a Mongolian Owl/hedgehog, or a HR Kangie ? lol. I’m only kidding Samuel ! Collect what you like, but with these, just take your time. Wait a year or longer. I’m betting everyone will be taking losses on these types. I’m afraid my HR’s that I prize, will one day be worth slightly above spot. That is why I’m getting smart and not buying everything that comes out like some of the folks here do.Believe this or not, some people here have to have everything that the others have, or talk about, yes no direction, sad.

  22. Louis says

G- A couple points. 1.) Other than the COA, what difference is there between the 2011 Libertad proof sets at APMEX and those on e-bay? As far as i can tell none.. I am okay with skipping the COA and saving $70 or whatever, and I am not sure how much difference it will make in the long run. If there is any quality issue, APMEX is very good about returns in my experience. Also, there are several years with 1K mintages, so I am not sure if these ones in part. will have any special premium unless they do turn out to be the last ones and we will not know that for a while.

2.) The only places I have seen the 2012 proof Libertads for sale is Don Bailey and e-Bay, and both of them just received their coins recently. So what is the basis for saying they came out “months ago” as you said?

  23. Samuel says

i bought the 5-coin set from apmex when it was $189, i did not see difference from the ebay ones, and i did not see CoA on the ebay ones either.

  24. says

@Louis….I can’t speak for G, but I don’t think there is any difference in the coins.
    I recently purchased (on ebay) a 2010 set that was # 378/1000. I paid $239.

I saw that APMEX was selling the 2011 sets without the COA for $195 at the time..I think now they are $185

However, I don’t ever see any 2010 sets like I bought for sale…except for the ones with the COA.

To me, it was worth paying a premium for a set that 10 years down the road I will be able to say…this set is 1 of 1000 sets.

Bottom line…the buy/sell prices probably offset each other. In other words, you can buy a set for less without the COA, but it will less for less down the road. Conversely, you pay a premium for a set that is 1 of 1000 as stated on the COA, and it will sell for a premium.

  25. Hidalgo says

@Dave and Samuel — I have been able to $100s by waiting for demand for US Mint products to decline. With a drop in demand, values go down — fewer are willing to pay a given amount of dollars for the same item.

Concerning the RCM and Mongolian coins — if the coins mean much to you right now, then buy them at the current price. At least you’re willing to possess an item that you’ll enjoy. Personally, I would not pay $100s for any of these coins. They simply are not worth the going price to me. To each his own… LOL.

Remember: The value of a coin (or ANY collectible) is what you’re willing to pay for it.

  26. Louis says

Samuel and Steve- Thanks, but Steve, I am not sure the COA will mean that much down the road. For US coins it does in many cases, but for world coins, I don’t think the COA is quite as important. If there were not such a difference in price, I would go for the COA one, but not in this case given how much one can save by skipping the certificate. Anyway, I like these sets, but there are other Libertad products that interest me more like the two and five ounce proof coins, which are really stunning and hard to find.

  27. Hidalgo says

@Samuel – I am uncertain if you have checked eBay prices recently, but it’s clear that the prices for the glow in the dark dinosaur coin is trending downward. A few weeks ago, the coin recently was selling for around $100 (US) on eBay. Right now, the coin is selling around the $75 (US) mark. Who knows where its price will be a year from now? Time will tell…..

  28. Broooster says

@ Hidalgo, I think the glow in the dark coin may trend down a little more, until the 2nd glow in the dark Dino comes along, then they will certainly go back up. If I remember correctly, this is the first of a set of 4, if not 5. A few more are on the way, and will make a very cool set for a kid, maybe even spark some coin collecting interest. I have the 1st one so far, will get all of them for the grandson. Hoping in a few yrs I can toss these his way and make a collector out of him, who knows.

  29. Wes says

Some have commented on receiving the two loon coin from RCM and receiving a low numbered coin. I ordered from the Canada Post office as soon as they became available and still says they are preparing my order and will ship soon. They have been saying that for a few weeks now.

  30. G says

Samuel and Louis: You pretty much nailed it on the sets. There is no difference in the coins, but the wood box is a different box and it comes with the coa- for whatever reason people pay a substantial premium for the coa and wood box. As far as the release date- that’s what the Mexican mint had listed, but it was clearly delayed. But comparing it to last year- the libertads were easily available all over the place- i.e. apmex, and other big companies. This year, there are so few available that my gut tells me it’s going to be a low mintage year. Also, about the kilo coins- I love the one I have, and if you can pick one up cheap, by all means!

  31. Dave in CT. says

Hildago, yes, agree. I am literally sick as to jumping to joy, in having to have my hedgehog and the owl. I am $1000 poor-er. But at least they are sitting on my TV cabinet. Sometimes they talk to me, but I do not understand Mongolian ! I think they’re saying, SUCKER !

  32. Samuel says

G, can u point to an ebay link that has the different box? my 2011 box looks the same as those on ebay.

  33. G says

Samuel- it’s very similar, I’ll gve a link to apmex, selling both the box and COA set in 2009 gold proof, and also a gold proof set from 2009. If you look closely, you’ll see the ‘authorized mintage’ and coa set has a lighter shade of wood, and the box doesn’t have hinges on the inside. It’s such a minute distinction, but there appears to be a solid market of collector’s of the mint sets so there is definitely a premium.

    here’s the authorized set:
    http://www.apmex.com/Product/65581/2009_Proof_Gold_Libertad_5_Coin_Set_w_Box__COA.aspx

And here’s the box set (non-authorized):
    http://www.apmex.com/Product/65903/2009_Proof_Gold_Libertad_5_Coin_Set_In_Wood_Box.aspx

To add to this: if you’re going to get them graded do not waste the extra $ on the COA sets. It’s almost like a subset of collectors- like those who like the CAC stickers or something.

  34. Samuel says

G, thanks for the info. i never looked into the gold set. the box with CoA definitely looks better.

  35. Hidalgo says

@Dave in CT — you spent $1,000 on a Mongolian hedgehog coin. Well, you can’t change the past so no since beating yourself over it. At the time, you felt that the coin was worth $1,000, so you spent $1,000. It was worth that much to you at the time you bought it.

So the market value is no longer $1,000. Well, if you add in the sentimental/emotional value of the coin, then you surely have a winner! Take a look at your coin, display it, and enjoy it!

  36. Dave in CT. says

Hildago, Thanks and I will/do. On the hedgehog and the owl (both), I spent
$1000.00, not $1K on the hog,so you can say each cost me $500. Still in a year or so, it will be worth $400 or so for the set. Hope I am wrong. Waiting to see that 2013 Armadillo. lol

  37. Shutter says

Re: Israel 2010 Jonah the Whale 2 NIS coin…is $~240 for a NGC PF70 a good price for this coin?
    Steve,
If you haven’t pulled the trigger, MCM has it now on sale for $188.

  38. G says

Happy Birthday everybody! I mean, me. I got a few proof libertads from Don Bailey for myself. Go out and buy yourself a nice coin for me today!

  39. Louis says

G- Sounds like Happy Birthday is in order, so HBD!!

By the way, I have ordered from Bailey a couple times and was generally pleased but my last order with the proof Libertad and some fractional BU coins has turned into a rather annoying situation. They sent me tracking info. that kept saying the package has not gone anywhere, so I called USPS and was told it was never actually mailed. The USPS only received the electronic info., no package.

But the guy who send the packages had major surgery on Monday and will be out of commission for several weeks and said he will mail it when he gets back. I have already been waiting several weeks and it will be around six weeks from the order placement to receipt and the items were available when I placed the order. I am just curious what you or others think of this.

I guess the bottom line is I just have to wait as long as it takes. Did you ever have any problems dealing with them? I do not think I will deal with them again.

  40. says

G, happy birthday….I took your advice and bought several coins today….from the 2010 Jonah/Whale…thanks to Shutter, to a complete set of the 2011 AtB bullion coins, to two, 5oz colorized dragon coins that were on sale for $158 each. Of course, with silver around $27, it seemed like a good buy as all of my purchases besides the Jonah/Whale, were tied to silver prices.

@Louis. it doesn’t make a lot of sense that one person would be responsible for sending out packages. They should have some back up…is Bailey basically a one-man operation?

  41. Louis says

Thanks, Steve, I agree. I did not want to seem insensitive esp. since I have had to deal with a lot of surgery and hospital stays in my life, but it did strike me as odd that there is not anyone else who could take care of it. One time when I was in that situation, I had a relative mail a package for me. Anyway, I think that what matters most is that I know they are not trying to rip me off. I appreciate your thoughts.

The other thing is I got my proof Libs for $70 each, and now they are $95, so I am happy about that and probably should have bought more than two. But I have not yet figured out how to print my own money! And there are so many interesting coins coming out these days.

I am thinking of getting a 1921 2 peso silver, which is the key date in that series and the inspiration for the modern Libertad bullion design that began in the early 1980’s. Prices on these are all over the map on e-Bay and I want to study things a little first. I don’t need a super high grade one, just an XF or so to keep me from going broke.

Today was indeed a good time to take advantage of the APMEX sale and lower silver prices. Enjoy your new coins.

  42. Samuel says

Louis, the Libertard is $70/$95? the past year ones are no more than $50, right? is it because the dealer is the earliest that sell the coin? apmex has a place holder for it now.
